    When it comes to Drosera I believe each variety of needs their own grow guide. Because people who are new to carnivorous plants might get confused. You wouldn't grow tropical Drosera the same way you grow a temperate or tuberous variety.

    Many thanks. Really useful video and tour. I'm very new to the idea of keeping Drosera spp. but have recently acquired my first seedlings of D. spatulata and D. capensis (I think!!). I was very interested in the comments about transitioning from peat to coir, which is necessary as we quite-rightly withdraw peat from general horticultural use. The comment about washing salts out of coir was intriguing. I'm not even sure how one would do that. It must be very messy, wasteful and time-consuming, and must use huge amounts of de-ionised / RO water to accomplish. I need to do more research into this.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 2 дня назад

      Yeah it's a royal pain! The last I looked there are products you can buy that are supposedly 'pre-washed' - I think Canna is one. That was some time ago - so I expect there are more options around now.

    Love them all! I was wondering why flower's stems are so short on mine. She has so much blooms but barely above the leaves. Do you have an idea about the reason? Maybe too much light (placed on a north-facing window sill)..? I don't know.. Thank you for your advice. It's always relevant and so clear 🙂

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 4 дня назад

      Yes - light can be a factor. Here are some others to consider: Light Conditions: Insufficient light can lead to shorter bloom stalks. Streptocarpus plants require bright, indirect light. Inadequate light may cause the plant to produce shorter stalks as it conserves energy. Nutrient Deficiency: Lack of essential nutrients, especially phosphorus and potassium, can result in stunted growth, including shorter bloom stalks. Balanced fertilization is crucial for optimal flowering. Watering Practices: Overwatering or underwatering can stress the plant, leading to shorter bloom stalks. Consistent, moderate watering is key to maintaining healthy growth. Temperature Stress: Extreme temperatures, either too hot or too cold, can affect the plant’s growth. Streptocarpus prefers moderate temperatures and may develop shorter bloom stalks if exposed to stress from temperature fluctuations. Root Health: Poor root health due to diseases, pests, or compacted soil can hinder the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients, resulting in shorter bloom stalks. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of it!

    • @daphne6973
      @daphne6973 4 дня назад

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I understood. I know watering, fertilizing (I use 🍅's fertiliser) and temperature are right. I think that light is bright enough (+- 400FC) but the soil is definitely compacted. She bloomed just before I had the time to repot so I wait for that. Thank you for your response. It's so kind of you 🙂😁

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 4 дня назад

      Glad it was helpful! Unfortunately there is no 'exact amount of fertiliser'. Factors affecting how much fertliser an orchid (or any plant) would need will vary, depending on the external conditions, the maturity of the plant, the season, the product you are using and so on. The best you can do - like the rest of us growers - is to follow the directions on the product packaging - but dilute more than they say - then monitor the results and make adjustments accordingly.

    Interesting, my tiger and zumba have very similar leaf contrast, neither more dramatic than the other. Your tiger paw eyelash is a lot more "muted" on contrast than the one I have. Maybe different light levels? Tiger paw at my house gets a couple hours of direct sunlight a day through the window, I noticed the leaves got more contrast-y after moving it to that spot from a full indirect light spot. Same deal for the soli mutata, a spot with an hour or two of direct gave them amazing coloring where the leaves were rather light in general before.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

    Hi I was wondering what are signs that it has started to go dormant? I purchased one a month ago and it has gotten new flowers almost every day until last week it all drooped down and shriveled up. I checked the tuber and it is hard still. Has dormancy begun?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 11 дней назад

      Dormancy isn't a usually sudden thing - the plant gradually slows down flowering, and the leaves slowly turn yellow. Could it be you've left it too long between watering? They can wilt easily. Dormancy naturally occurs during the summer - but as most people are growing hybrids, and very often hybrids that have been manipulated, dormancy can be erratic until it settles down into a more natural rhythm. Providing you're sure it isn't just too dry, then I would accept it's going dormant, however erratically it might be doing this, and I'd then water just enough to prevent the media from shrinking away from the sides of the pot, put somewhere less bright and then leave it to it till autumn.

      I wouldn’t. New pitchers are plenty capable of creating their own digestive juices. If you spill it out, just leave it - the plant will create more when it’s ready. You can keep it fed with a dilute orchid spray if it isn’t able to catch its own food.
